During a regular season home game on February 12, 2026, the Potomac Boys Varsity Basketball Team pulled off an upset for the ages, taking down the Sidwell Quakers, who have won the MAC 3 straight years in a row. The last time Potomac beat the Quakers was in 2019, snapping a long losing streak through the years. The environment was electric; the crowd was cheering, the game was intense (and a little chippy), and Spangler? Absolutely rocking. That was just one of the many memorable moments of this year’s Potomac Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball seasons.
Seniors Mason Douglas, Akim Iscandari, and Logan Jones captained the boys team during their last season at Potomac. Their first victory came against Collegiate in the annual Potomac Tip-Off Tournament, with a final score of 66-50. The boys ended the regular season with a very strong record of 17 wins and 7 losses, earning them a higher seed in the MAC postseason tournament and a spot in the VISAA state tournament. Unfortunately, Potomac lost to a very talented St. Andrew’s Episcopal team in the semifinals of the MAC tournament and then to St. Christopher’s in the first round of the VISAA tournament. However, they finished with a very strong ranking of 31st in the state of Virginia. Stat leaders included Akim Iscandari (16.2 PPG), Anthony Garris ‘27 (8.8 REB/G), Declan Conley ‘28 (33% 3PT FG), and Logan Jones (77 FT%). In terms of team stats, the boys led the conference in points per game with 63.3 points per game. In addition, they had only one regular season home loss. Lastly, some important accomplishments by the players included Iscandari reaching the 1000-point milestone, and Iscandari and Garris earning spots on the All-MAC team. Overall, it was a great season for the boys, and we wish all of our seniors good luck as they continue their basketball journeys.
Potomac Girls Varsity Basketball also had a very successful season, as their first victory also came against Collegiate during the Tip-Off Tournament. They crushed the Cougars with a score of 73-10. The team also ended up winning the entire tournament itself, starting the season off on a great note. Although they ended their regular season with a phenomenal record of 19-8, they lost a hard-fought battle in the MAC tournament to Sidwell and a neck-and-neck battle with St. Anne’s-Belfield in the VISAA state tournament. Ultimately, they were able to finish in the top 20 in the state of Virginia, a strong performance for the Panthers. Statistical leaders for the girls included Sabrina Anderson ‘27 (23.3 PPG, 40% 3PT FG, and 93 FT%) and Mia Morrill ‘27 (6.3 REB/G). Some extremely impressive accomplishments by the girls included Ava Sewall ‘26 reaching the 1000-point milestone, Nyla Curry ‘29 earning a spot on the VISAA All-State Second Team, and Anderson earning a spot on the All-State First Team. It ended up being a great season for the girls, and we also wish the seniors the best of luck as they continue their basketball journeys outside of Potomac.
