With the 2026 NFL Draft coming up in April, the Commanders look to make an upgrade to their team. After a disappointing five-win season, the Commanders hold the seventh pick in this year’s draft. Washington currently has the oldest roster in the NFL and has room for new additions on both sides of the ball. With that, here are the top five prospects I believe would best fit for the Washington Commanders.
Caleb Downs (S) – Ohio State (#2 pictured above)
The Commanders added many new players to their defense during the offseason. Some major signings included Edge Odafe Oweh, Edge K’Lavon Chaisson, LB Leo Chenal, and CB Amik Robertson. An explosive player like Caleb Downs could be the best fit for this Commanders defense who struggled last year in the secondary. This Washington defense gave up the most yards per game last year (384) and ranked 28th in passing yards per game (242.5). Not to mention, the Commanders struggled with injuries and availability. Caleb Downs missed zero games during his three-year collegiate career at Alabama and Ohio State. He is a versatile player who always makes a huge impact on the game. I strongly believe the Commanders should take a chance on Caleb Downs.
Sonny Styles (LB) – Ohio State
Styles stands out as one of the most versatile and impactful defensive draft prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft, making him a perfect fit for Washington. At 6’4” and 230 pounds, Styles has the size of a linebacker but moves like a safety, allowing him to impact the game in multiple ways. During his time at Ohio State, he consistently filled the stat sheet, recording strong tackle numbers, several tackles for a loss, and contributing in pass coverage with pass breakups and interceptions. What separates Styles is his ability to do everything; he can stop the run, cover tight ends, and blitz effectively, making him a true “positionless” defender in today’s NFL. For a Commanders defense that needs more playmakers and flexibility, Styles would bring both immediate production and long-term upside, fitting perfectly into a modern defensive scheme that values speed, intelligence, and versatility.
Sonny Styles also made a name for himself at this year’s NFL Combine, backing up his field production with elite athletic testing that few players at his size can match. Styles reportedly posted a 4.4 second 40-yard dash, along with a 43.5-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot broad jump, numbers that rival those of much smaller defensive backs. These numbers are not just impressive, but unheard of for a linebacker of his size. In fact, those marks place him among the most explosive and fastest players in Combine history for his size. Those results highlight just how rare his physical profile is; he combines speed, size, and explosiveness that all translate to game situations. For NFL teams like Washington, his Combine performance didn’t just confirm his athleticism—it solidified him as one of the most unique and high-upside defensive prospects in the entire draft class.
David Bailey (OLB/Edge) – Texas Tech
Bailey is one of the most intriguing edge rushers in the 2026 NFL Draft, bringing a mix of both explosiveness and upside that would greatly benefit the Washington Commanders’ defense. At Texas Tech, Bailey developed into a disruptive force off the edge, using his quick first step and natural blend to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks. He put together a strong season with double-digit tackles for loss and an amazing sack total (14.5), showing his ability to both collapse the pocket and make plays in the backfield against the run. His motor and athleticism stand out most; he doesn’t quit on plays and has the speed to chase down ball carriers from behind. This Commanders team has needed to boost their pass rush for a long time. While they made some strong offseason moves, Bailey offers high upside and could develop into a star.
Carnell Tate (WR) – Ohio State
The Commanders’ biggest need right now is at wide receiver. They have been greatly impacted by their lack of depth at the position, forcing quarterback Jayden Daniels to play Superman just to keep the offense moving. With inconsistent separation and a lack of reliable playmakers behind Terry McLaurin, the passing game often relied on Daniels to extend plays and create something out of nothing, which ultimately led to more hits and injuries. This is exactly why Carnell Tate stands out as such an important potential addition in this year’s draft. At Ohio State, Tate proved himself as a polished and reliable receiver. He has a mix of smooth route running with strong hands and a natural ability to get open. Averaging over 17 yards per catch, he consistently stretched the field while also showing the body control to win contested catches. What makes Tate especially valuable is his balance; he is not just a deep threat, but a complete wide receiver who can create separation and make plays after the catch. Adding Tate would give Jayden Daniels another weapon and a chance to give this offense another dimension.
Jeremiyah Love (RB) – Notre Dame
After free agency, the Commanders are still nowhere near perfect, especially the secondary; however, they may be in a position to take the best player available. Jeremiyah Love is one of the most explosive offensive playmakers in the 2026 NFL Draft, and he could add a completely new dimension to the Washington Commanders’ offense. At Notre Dame, Love emerged as a dynamic running back with elite speed and big-play ability, consistently turning routine carries into chunk gains. He showcased his versatility by contributing both on the ground and in the passing game, finishing the season with over 1,000 rushing yards, double-digit touchdowns, and valuable production as a receiver out of the backfield. What makes Love especially dangerous are his acceleration and vision—once he finds a gap, he has the burst to take it the distance. For a Commanders offense looking to support its quarterback with more explosive weapons, Love offers home-run potential every time he touches the ball, making him a strong “best player available” option if Washington wants to invest in a game-changing offensive piece.
The Washington Commanders have a chance to address critical weaknesses and add game-changing talent in this year’s draft. Whether it’s a versatile defender like Sonny Styles, a dynamic playmaker like Jeremiyah Love, a disruptive pass rusher like David Bailey, or a reliable receiver like Carnell Tate, each prospect offers a clear path to improving the team immediately.
