On Friday, April 11th, Potomac hosted our annual Around the World celebration. Held in Spangler, the event showcased food, dance, clothes, and culture from over 40 countries. Attendees were wowed by gorgeous traditional dress across countries and other cultural accessories, such as headdresses and jewelry. Booths served a wide range of food, including delicious bao buns from China, Swedish pepparkakor (gingerbread) cupcakes, and brigadeiros from Brazil.
Shows on the main stage started off with the fashion show, featuring traditional and modern dress from an array of different countries: Indian saris, Irish kilts, Italian streetwear, and more. Students then gave a wide array of performances, exhibiting traditions from their own cultures. Kindergarten, grades 3-5, the IS and the South Asian Student Alliance (SASA) showcased their talents with an impressive Bollywood dance.
Around the World is a special tradition at Potomac, allowing students and families to share their traditions and culture. The event started in 2013, having evolved from a book fair theme in 2007. Since then, it has become a yearly highlight for students and teachers alike. Long-time Potomac employee Mrs. Jeanette Bolton noted that the “parents did a fabulous job… and the entertainment the students provided was very uplifting.” Around the World is a great event that brings the community together to share and celebrate the diversity of cultures at Potomac.
