Both Potomac basketball teams competed Friday, December 6th in the 35th Annual Tip-Off Tournament and went home with huge wins. The girls team, facing Episcopal, dominated, winning by a huge margin. The game was never close, as Potomac stifled them on defense and overpowered them with their three-point shooting. Sophomore guard Sabrina Eldridge was hot early, hitting three early 3s in the first quarter. After that, the game was a blowout, with Potomac leading 47-19 at halftime. All-State sophomore point guard Sabrina Anderson was steady throughout, racking up 16 points and leading the team to a solid win.
On the boys side, the season opener against St. John Paul the Great High School was highlighted by exciting changes surrounding the program. The game marked Head Coach Jeremy Myers’s first game as the leader of the Potomac Panther squad. Also new to the team are two transfers: junior Mason Douglas and sophomore Daniel Russell. Daniel got the game started with a left-handed layup, and junior Grey Chamberlain knocked down two 3s to give Potomac an 18-9 lead after the first quarter. In the third, Mason got hot, making three 3s, including an ankle-breaking step-back three. In the fourth quarter, John Paul made a comeback and cut it to a three-point game. Junior guard Akim Iscandari was clutch down the stretch with six points in the fourth quarter. Daniel ended the game with an emphatic slam to seal a 59-48 win to start a new era for Potomac boys basketball.
Despite their successes on Friday, however, both teams faltered in their respective championship games the next day. The girls team lost in a 61-67 heartbreaker to Osbourn Park, while the boys team shared the same fate, losing 52-61 to Albany Academy.
Overall, the girls team is looking to improve on last season’s loss in the ISL semifinals, while the boys are looking to rebound from a tough 2023-2024 season. Make sure to check each team’s schedule online and come out to support our Panthers!
