About The Current
Welcome to The Current!
The Current is the student news site of The Potomac School, located in McLean, Virginia. The Current was founded in 1993 and has been publishing important news and information for our students, faculty, staff, and community continuously since then. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve been publishing both in print and online.
Our Mission Statement: We help people understand The Potomac School from a student perspective.
We believe that journalism has the power to both unite and divide a community. The Potomac Current is committed to strengthening our community through our work. By writing about The Potomac School from a student perspective, we will foster empathy, curiosity, and a greater understanding of our community among our readers.
Our Values
Integrity
We believe that integrity is central to meaningful journalism. We value integrity in all parts of our journalistic process, including in researching, interviewing, and writing. We understand that the value of our publication is dependent on its integrity, and we strive to build trust with our readers.
Collaboration
We value collaboration between the members of our staff, between staff and faculty advisors, and between staff and the school community. We believe that our paper is made better when students with different experiences at Potomac work together to publish a paper that reflects the variations in experience at our school.
Respect
As a paper, we understand that respecting all viewpoints in our community is important. We respect viewpoints that are different from those we publish in opinion articles, and we encourage open conversation between our staff and our readers.
Fairness
We believe in fair and unbiased reporting. We aim to consider all perspectives and to not hold one opinion as superior to another, even in the face of external pressures. We are committed to publishing articles that reflect the opinions of all students.
Learning
As a student organization, one of our goals is to foster learning among our staff. We believe that our staff is made stronger when we learn from each other. Additionally, we hope that our paper allows readers to learn about our community from a student perspective.
