This summer, I traveled around quite a bit for archery, including California, New Mexico, Ohio, and New Jersey – because nothing says “vacation” like hauling around a bow through airport security. Outside of training and competing, I was mainly back home spending time with friends and family, exploring new restaurants in Georgetown.

I had a fairly chill summer spent mostly just fooling around. It included lots of early morning runs, many of which were at Clarks Crossing Park (the most niche running spot in the DMV) with Hugh Antonik, a trip to Boston, and quite a lot of hot, humid DC weather. The highlights had to be my mini golf and zoo excursions with some friends and cross country preseason.

I went on our Potomac Italy trip this summer! Between modern museums and centuries-old statues, you would find us snorkeling in Baia, and making our own gnocchi (a.k.a. eating a glorious amount of pasta). We also toured Rome on bikes via the Appian Way, projected our voices across amphitheaters to see if the acoustics still worked (they do), translated original Latin inscriptions (with no spaces or punctuation), and watched characters from our textbooks come to life. All this under the intense Roman sun, where gelato proved less of a dessert and more of a survival mechanism. I left with my camera roll full of Roman ruins and the validating reminder that Latin isn’t nearly as “dead” as it seems!

My nine-year-old nephew Miles plays travel baseball, so I spent a lot of time in August going to his games with my family. He’s very competitive and is a standout on the team, so it’s been great to see him do his thing and excel out there.

Most weekends in the summer, you can find me at the beach in Fenwick Island, DE. Between beach trips, I took my 8-year-old daughter to New York City and saw Wicked on Broadway. And no summer would be complete without seeing the beautiful July 4th fireworks in DC. I had a perfect view from a rooftop in Arlington.

I spent some of the summer biking and eating in Canada. Then my older son (Doug) who lives in Madison, WI, and my younger son (Andrew), who goes to school in Indiana, and my “third son” (Luis) who lives in Tokyo were all at home at the same time for two weeks, and I spent a lot of time with them and some of their old Potomac friends (see photo). Mostly, of course, I longed for school to start so that I could see my beloved students and teach them physics.

I spent a great deal of time with my family in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) mainly, near the Columbia River Gorge. We visited multiple scenic waterfalls, a Benedictine monastery where they are known for their beer (among other things); and of course, no trip to the PNW is complete without multiple stops at the plethora of distinctive coffee shops.

Despite vowing to finally relax, my summer ended up being a whirlwind—I got engaged in the Swiss Alps, traveled to Germany and Austria, worked with rising kindergarteners at Summer@Potomac camp for five weeks, went to Sweden and Denmark, visited Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, and started preseason coaching with the Potomac cross country team. I got to sample lots of hot chocolate—the drink that sustains me—from around the world, and I can report with confidence that Copenhagen had some of the best. And although the sunsets in Switzerland were pretty fantastic, the true highlight of my summer was getting to reunite with friends from afar and spend lots of quality time with my people. Looking forward to a great school year!
