What is Model United Nations, or “Model UN”? Model UN is a simulation of discussion between delegates (students) representing countries or people within a specific committee. Each committee poses relevant issues, and delegates must work together to offer resolutions. Model UN embodies the diplomacy, collaboration, and partnership that are tenets of the United Nations and other international organizations.
Leaders of Potomac’s Model UN Club, Garrett Hicks ’25, Alex Martin ’25, Karina Satoskar ’25, and I (Aiden Yuan ’27) arranged and hosted the second Potomac School Model United Nations Conference (PSMUNC II) on February 7th and 8th. Around 150 delegates from nearby schools participated in unique discussions ranging from Star Wars and Among Us to genome editing and limiting financial cybercrime.
Last year, inspired by my interest in the UN and international relations, I got involved with Model UN for the first time. Since then, I have become a co-leader and have sincerely committed to the activity. At this year’s conference, we hosted engaging committees, including our iconic Among Us Crisis committee, simulating the popular murder-mystery video game set in outer space. I had an amazing time also being the chair of the Harry Potter committee, where exciting events presented new problems to delegates (in this case, wizards) in real time! Beyond our more light-hearted committees, there were meaningful and innovative discussions in committees such as the International Labor Organization, the United Nations Security Council, and more.
Though PSMUNC II was a success, the club’s relatively small size limits its true potential. I hope more people know about the fun behind MUN, so if you are interested, please stop by room U303 during the next Clubs B meeting!
