As the dance team approaches one of their final performances, the seniors look forward to celebrating Senior Night on Friday, January 31st, in Spangler. As the team has been recently recognized as a sport, the dancers are extremely excited for people to come to this event, celebrate our seniors, and celebrate the growth of Potomac’s dance program. Danica Allen (‘25) and Charlotte Sumner (‘25) have led the team this year, navigating the first year in the history of Potomac sports that our school has had a dance team with a sports credit. Carrying on Lola Monroe (‘24) and Melanie Breslin’s (‘24) legacy, who were the driving forces behind the creation of the dance team starting in 2022, Charlotte and Danica look forward to passing down the team to lowerclassmen next year in hopes of making dance team an interscholastic sport, competing against other schools. Sports credits, performances, and coaches were all aspects of the dance team that Danica and Charlotte worked on this year. Although the road has been rocky, and there have been lots of “stop signs,” the leaders of the dance team hope that the program at Potomac will continue to grow.
The Senior Night performance will consist of two dances: the first dance was choreographed by Ms. Blake Green to music from Thunderstruck, and the second dance was choreographed by Danica and Charlotte to music from Get Up. The dance choreographed by Ms. Green highlights the dance team’s ability to adapt to different styles of dance and their willingness to try new things. Previously, the team has performed mostly hip hop/jazz dances; this is the first time the dance team is utilizing a different style. Dancers will use pom poms, and many team members have never performed this competition-style dance.
Although the dance team’s official season is coming to an end in the coming weeks, they are looking forward to upcoming events in the spring, such as performing at Red-Blue Day, possibly doing a showcase in EPAC, and hosting several workshops. Thanks to Ms. Green, all of these events have been made possible, and the dance team has been able to grow tremendously this year. The team has received uniforms and gear, which were never previously supplied, and the team has been given more opportunities to perform this year at various sports and Upper School events. Now that the work has paid off and a sports credit has been earned, a new battle is ready for the dance team to take on: becoming an interscholastic sport and competing against other local private schools. Private schools in our area such as Flint Hill, Georgetown Day, and Holton Arms all have dance teams that perform and compete as interscholastic sports- why can’t Potomac? Hope to see everyone at Senior Night on the 31st!
