The Potomac Varsity Volleyball team had an unforgettable season this fall, leaving a legacy of hard-fought victories, intense matches, and strong teamwork. With four seniors, Adalena Rodgers, Skylar Guiliani, Zora Burrell, and Alexis Vaughan, anchoring the starting line-up, the team ended their season with an impressive record of 15-4, finishing 4th in the ISL and 2nd in the state–a testament to their skill and determination.
One of the season’s highlights was on Senior Night when Potomac faced long-term rival Flint Hill. In a nail-biting five-set match, the Panthers emerged victorious, marking the first time in history that Potomac had defeated Flint Hill. This win was especially memorable, as it ended Flint Hill’s 12-year unbeaten streak in conference play, a feat that solidified Potomac’s status as a powerhouse in the league.
As the team advanced to the ISL conference tournament, they faced off against Georgetown Day School, the top-ranked team in the entire DMV region. The Panthers were the only team in the conference able to take a set off GDS this year. Taking the match to a thrilling five sets, Potomac narrowly missed the victory by just four points in the final set, displaying resilience and strength against a formidable opponent.
The Panthers met Flint Hill again in the state semifinals on November 7. It was another intense five-set battle, and despite their best efforts, Potomac fell by a narrow two-point margin in the fifth set. The heartbreaking loss did not diminish the pride of the team and their supporters for their incredible season and remarkable achievements.
The unforgettable season also brought individual recognition for Potomac’s outstanding players. Seniors Zora Burrell, Adalena Rodgers, and Skylar Guiliani were selected for the All-ISL team, a testament to their remarkable contributions throughout the season. Their talent and hard work were further recognized on the state level: Skylar earned a spot on the VISAA Volleyball All-State 1st Team, while Adalena and Zora were named to the 2nd Team. These accolades highlight their skill, dedication, and leadership on and off the court, making their final season with the Panthers truly memorable.
Reflecting on the season, Skylar Giuliani shared, “This team is something special. Every game, we fought together with everything we had, and the bonds we’ve formed will last far beyond this season. Beating Flint Hill and competing at such a high level was an incredible experience, and I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved.”
Under the guidance of Head Coach Jasmine Jackson and Assistant Coaches Amelia Browne and Jordan Armstrong, the team not only achieved historic milestones but also cultivated a close-knit, supportive environment. Their coaching style struck a balance between pushing for excellence and fostering camaraderie, making the season both rewarding and enjoyable for players across all grades.
Sophomore Sophia Grimm remarked, “It was amazing to play alongside such talented seniors and to learn from them. Their leadership and dedication inspired all of us to keep pushing ourselves every day.”
As a senior captain on this team, I’ve never been more proud to be a part of something so special. This season wasn’t just about wins or stats–it was about the moments we shared, the lessons we learned, and the legacy we left behind. Leading this incredible group of players has been an honor, and while it’s bittersweet to graduate, I know this team’s spirit and determination will continue to shine in the years to come.
