Potomac hosted Maret on Saturday, October 19th, for their annual Homecoming game. The game marked the first time Camren Boykin, a three-star quarterback and Temple University commit, has returned to Potomac’s turf after leaving last year. With laser focus, the defense stifled the Frogs’ offense and Cam all night, but Potomac ultimately fell short, losing 12-7.
The scoring began with a 97-yard pick 6 from senior and defensive end EJ Schneeberg early in the 1st quarter. Schneeberg broke through Maret’s offensive line and intercepted the ball off the tip, then ran the entire length of the field for Potomac’s first and only touchdown of the game.
Both teams fought hard all game, leading to a stalemate on offense, but Maret was able to find its way into the endzone twice. Maret’s first touchdown was delivered on a 4-yard dash from Boykin with 9:45 left in the second quarter. Neither team scored in the third, making the fourth quarter crucial for both teams. Maret and Potomac traded punts for the first half of the fourth quarter, but the Frogs eventually found their way into the endzone once again on a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Potomac’s defense came up huge with 2 minutes left in the fourth quarter, however, giving the Panther offense the ball back with a chance to score and win the game. Junior quarterback Sean Sutherland trotted onto the field, knowing he needed to orchestrate a game-winning drive. With the offense backed up on their own side of the field, 4th down and 20 with the game on the line, Sutherland lobbed it up to senior wide receiver Nathan Alexander, who caught it over his defender for an impressive 40-yard gain. The Panthers hurried to the line and spiked it into the ground with 30 seconds left to stop the clock. After a couple more passes, it all came down to the last play of the game. With 7 seconds left, Sutherland lobbed a pass into the end zone. However, it was picked off by Maret’s safety Nick May, ending the game in a Panther loss and a final score of 12-7.
