This Tuesday, October 3rd, both Potomac’s varsity and JV field hockey teams faced off against rival Flint Hill. Potomac’s varsity team lost 4-1, while the JV recorded an impressive 5-0 shutout. The varsity’s record now stands at 2-6, while the JV team boasts a 6-1 record.
Potomac’s varsity’s defense remained impenetrable in the first quarter, but Flint Hill slipped through seven minutes into the second quarter. In the later minutes of the second quarter, two more Flint Hill attackers again snuck through Potomac’s defense, scoring a minute before the quarter ended and then three minutes into the third quarter. In the final quarter, Bella Kim ‘25 fired in a shot, denying Flint Hill a shutout. With a final goal by the Flint Hill offense, the game ended 4-1. From Coach Mays’ perspective, the team is on track after it graduated many of its strongest players last spring. “I wouldn’t say we’re having an off-season” she said. “We graduated a lot of players. We are integrating some new players in and we’ve actually played some really good hockey. It’s a little bit of a rebuild, but we’ll find our footing.”
In the JV contest, the Panthers seldom let the ball cross to their side, consistently and deftly passing the ball back and forth. Meritt Leahey ‘27 scored Potomac’s first goal 6 minutes into the first quarter. Leyton Mayrhofer ‘27 and Meritt showed great zeal, keeping the ball out of Flint Hill’s prying grasp the rest of the game. Lily Anderson ‘27 scored another goal only 2 minutes before the first half ended, while Merrit showed her excellent speed and scored 3 more remarkable goals in the third quarter – ending the game with a dominant score of 5-0. After the game, Leyton said, “A lot of us don’t have a lot of experience or don’t play outside of school – so it’s nice when we all come together and just play well.”
